Green line expansion in union square Description An account of the resource In my final paper I discuss the Green Line extension project, and the potential impact that I will have on Union Square, and Somerville as a whole. The interesting and unusual thing about Union Square, is that while this change in population has been a natural slow shift over the past 25 years, a proposed transit project is set to dramatically tilt the demographics and cost-of-living in the near future. This project is the expanded MBTA Green line, with a new subway stop at Union Square planned to open in 2017. I believe that gentrification is already occurring in the area, and that the green line extension project will serve as accelerant to the gentrification of the area. I address possible public policy that can be put in place to prevent this possible displacement, while allowing the important transit development to continue. Title A name given to the resource Duligur Ibeling Description An account of the resource I took this photo at the corner of Gove St. and Chelsea St. Some mild “broken windows” indicators are visible: less well-maintained or vacant buildings and streets, dusty sidewalks and small pieces of litter. But the neighborhood works for its residents: they have salons with local flavor, children and pedestrians can walk freely about, and cars are parked freely. (The school bus in the background especially suggests the presence of children, and we can see a child and adult near the entrance of the salon.) The map shows the level of “physical disorder,” which encompasses many classic “broken windows” indicators (see Boston Research Map for details). Title A name given to the resource Edward Vasquez Description An account of the resource This mosaic hangs outside the entrance to an elementary school in the center of the South End. To me, it represents a child’s idyllic vision of what the South End is and can be. The prominent features of the piece to me are the references to different ethnic groups in different sections, as well as the nature motifs of tress and the sun and the rainbow in the middle. The mentions of different ethnic groups, as well as the various faces, hands, and bodies, suggest the not only the multicultural nature of the South End, but the possibility of cooperation and cohabitation in the neighborhood, as many of the bodies stand alongside those of different colors.
