IMAG1530.jpg was taken on the intersection of Green and Bunker Hill Streets and shows the historic district of Charlestown on one side and the projects on the other. One of the stores advertises that it accepts EBT and WIC (welfare and food stamps), and the cars lining the street are all shiny.

IMAG1534.jpg is a photograph of the map I used to navigate through Charlestown. I have traced my loop on this map. I also mark where the photo was taken. Finally, the indicators (for the first half, it's # of trash items per yard; for the second half, it's % MA license plates) are marked next to the streets in boxes and circles.</text>

<text>This photo was taken at the intersection of Wallace Ct and Winthrop Street (the Audi is parked on Winthrop Street), which is very close to the Bunker Hill Monument, and in one of the wealthiest areas of Charlestown. I thought that the mid-sized Audi, the charming lamppost, and high-end townhouse in the background all reflected the wealth of the area very well. This was also representative of several blocks surrounding this intersection in that the homes and cars all looked fairly similar to these.

Juxtaposed with these symbols of wealth are other symbols that exclude outsiders. The Private Parking sign is prominently displayed, and the black fence is pristine and newly painted. These both seemed to indicate to visitors that they were unwelcome unless they had expressly been invited by a neighborhood resident.</text>

<text>David Luberoff is a lecturer on sociology and a senior project advisor to the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study’s Boston Area Research Initiative. From 2004 until 2012, he was Executive Director of Harvard’s Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston, which seeks to improve the governance of the region by strengthening ties between scholars, students, officials, and civic leaders, thus addressing a variety of key urban issues. He co-developed and co-taught “Reinventing Boston,” a General Education class at Harvard that used Boston to introduce undergraduates to a variety of urban issues. He has also been Associate Director of the Taubman Center for State and Local Government at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, an adjunct lecturer at both the Kennedy School and Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, and editor of The Tab, the largest group of weekly newspapers in greater Boston. The author of many articles and case studies on the politics of infrastructure and land-use policies, he is the co-author (with Alan Altshuler) of Mega-Projects: The Changing Politics of Urban Public Investment, which was named 2003’s best book on urban politics by the American Political Science Association’s urban section. He received an M.P.A. from the Kennedy School of Government.</text>
