Left of the Bunker Hill Street (of this view) are condominiums of wood siding exterior walls and high rental prices. To the right are the Bunker Hill Housing Projects, made of brick. The Bunker Hill Street seems to be a dividing line for two different worlds. White residents predominantly live in the condominiums, and Hispanic, Black, and Asian residents predominantly reside in the housing projects. There is a great dichotomy of rental prices of the buildings, household income, demographics, physical disorder, and private neglect between these areas. This picture captures two contrasting neighborhoods that share a street (Bunker Hill Street) and serve differing perceptions for outsiders and residents. MAP COMMENTS: My map is of Charlestown, with a focus on the Lexington Street, Monument Street, Bunker Hill Street, O’Reilly Way neighborhoods. The red dots represent location of litter in the areas. Lexington Street and Monument Street (leading up to Bunker Hill Street) had little to no litter at the beginning of the streets. However, closer to Bunker Hill Street, greater amounts of litter were visible. Litter lined the sidewalks and streets in the Bunker Hill Housing Projects of O’Reilly Way. This confirms the greater physical disorder in the project housing areas compared to the more upscale neighborhoods around them. Title A name given to the resource COMMUNICATION ETHICS AS SHOWN BY TWO PEOPLE NAMED HAL -- AN ESSAY Description An account of the resource This paper looks at how Hal, a character in Infinite Jest, communicates with other people. It tries to figure out a good ethics for talking to faceless strangers and getting to know them, also looking at Infinite Jest’s literary precedent, Hamlet, for examples. Finally, the paper follows my own experiences with acting, struggling to interact with other people during and afterward. The paper suggests that communication is a constant struggle to avoid facelessness, and that communication itself can also become the object instead of the person or place underneath it, which is why a constant attempt to rediscover the territory underneath is necessary. Title A name given to the resource Cradle of Liberty, Cradle of Knowledge: the Dual Identity of the Copley Library Description An account of the resource While making observations about the Fields Corner Public Library for the Dorchester assignment, I became interested in the way libraries in Boston marketed themselves as public spaces designed specifically for perceived needs in the local community. I realized I had never felt this so acutely when visiting the central branch of the Boston Public Library system in Copley square, and decided to visit and try to see if and how the Copley branched balanced the duties of being an international tourist destination with serving a local Bostonian community. I found a surprising number of indications that the Copley branch worked hard to help improve specific aspects of local life, such as the effects of homelessness or the difficulty of applying for college. In trying to figure out why I had never noticed this or why it might be surprising, I hypothesized that the other side of the library – which very explicitly acts as a museum and memorial to Boston’s ‘cradle of liberty’ culture – may consider it in its best interest to seclude these less glamorous aspects of the library, which may complicate the tourist narrative of Boston and the Copley branch of the Boston Public Library. Description An account of the resource I wrote a magazine article that explored the changes in Boston’s bike culture and bike infrastructure in the last decade. I guided my research with questions like: What caused these changes? Who were the big players in changing things? What does the new face of biking in Boston look like? And what changes are still being pushed for? As the project progressed, I tried to shift to also understanding why things changed. What social and political factors helped bike advocates’ cause? I am including a picture of me biking through Jamaica Plain, which captures the spirit of my process (A friend took this when she joined me on a ride to take pictures of different types of bike lanes in Boston). I tried to get a good understanding of the biking situation by talking with people who have been involved in the politics, going for rides myself, and visiting a bike shop that one of my interviewees (Steve Miller) told me about.
