Title A name given to the resource Marina Spinelli Description An account of the resource My map, generated by Social Explorer, shows the racial composition of the South End. Each dot represents one individual, and the various colors of the dots indicate the different races. I have included a legend to determine which color represents which race. I have outlined the boundaries of the South End, as well as highlighted Tremont Street and Shawmut Avenue, the main two roads which I explored during my walk. I have also included in the map pinpoints of where I found cigarette packages as litter throughout the neighborhood; this was one indicator that I counted during my neighborhood walk. Each point is labeled either Camel, Winston, or Newport, referring to the brand of the cigarette package. Because there is a racial preference for different cigarette brands, as my paper discusses, this indicator provides insight to the racial composition of the neighborhood as well as the extent to which the neighborhood is racially segregated and/or integrated. Title A name given to the resource Matt Kaliner, Professor Subject The topic of the resource Matt Kaliner has been fascinated by urban culture since he was old enough to pedal his bicycle into – and all over – Washington. Attending Brandeis University, Class of 2000, for college, Kaliner has warmed up to Boston as an equally interesting mosaic of neighborhoods and a physical expression of public culture and difference. Although he still feels most at home exploring the city on bike or foot, he has found in sociology and spatial analysis a much more powerful set of tools for the systematic study of the city. Kaliner’s dissertation draws on a series of life-long interests, from the fear of crime and real estate markets to the spatial dynamics of artistic communities, to explore culture and neighborhood change in the contemporary American city. He has published papers on the cultural and political divergence of Vermont and New Hampshire (with Jason Kaufman), the political philosophy of Michael Oakeshott (with Steven Teles), the uses of social science data archives (with Jacqueline James), and political protest patterns and tactics (with Bayliss Camp). Broadway and C shows the ways in which South Boston is shifting as a neighborhood. We see a sign for Al’s Liquors directly facing the sign for Foodie Market. In an almost spatial rivalry, the two exist and share this intersection in an eerie battle between present and perhaps, past. My map, on the other hand, was my attempt to understand the ways in which actual rent was changing. One of the biggest markers of gentrification is the change in property value where rent rises and poorer residents are pushed out; I wanted to see what South Boston’s rent looked like when mapped out. I was familiar with the housing developments on the corner of West Broadway and B Street, but I was not aware of the enormous amount of construction and corporate development work also going on in the neighborhood. I thought to map the Median Gross Rents, in an effort to demonstrate the ways in which South Boston is becoming less of a highly low-income neighborhood and trying to attract young, wealthier, professionals. Although the newly built, and developing condominiums are not reflected in this map, I think this data tells us a lot about where Southie housing has been and where it will go. I suspect that the new apartments being built across the street from the West Broadway Housing Development- once completed- will highly alter this data.
