Stern is a third-year PhD Student whose research focuses on the history and theory of urban form in rapidly urbanizing regions. His dissertation project studies the interplay of industrialization, institutional development and spatial morphology in major cities in East and Southeast Asia. Questions addressed in Justin’s research include: In what ways do the contemporary urban forms of cities in Asia, and their dominant building typologies, reflect the economic and political restructuring of the previous half century? What role do large-scale, diversified corporate conglomerates, such as Samsung Group in Korea and Ayala Corporation in the Philippines, play in urban development? And how can the experience of Seoul and other cities in East Asia, as inductive role models, better inform rapidly developing regions in Southeast Asia and beyond? Justin holds a Master of Urban Planning (MUP) from Harvard University and completed his bachelor’s degree at Sarah Lawrence College and the University of Oxford. During the 2012-2013 academic year, Justin served as a Fulbright Fellow in Seoul, South Korea and was the recipient of a Harvard-Frederick Sheldon Traveling Fellowship to support comparative fieldwork. He has presented his work at numerous venues including The East Asia Regional Organization for Planning and Human Settlements World Congress; TedxTaipei; Hong Kong University; Leiden University; the Cosmopolitan China Conference at the University of Manchester (UK); the University of Seoul; and the Pakistan Urban Forum in Karachi. In addition to working on his dissertation, Justin currently serves as a Teaching Fellow at Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School of Design. He is also finalizing a short documentary film and exhibition on trans-border infrastructure in Central Asia. Title A name given to the resource Karen Maldonado Description An account of the resource On the corner of Monument Street and Bunker Hill Street stands an old brick building housing a streetside market. An ATM is advertised in the window, but most prominently featured is a laundry-line of “Charlestown Townie” merchandise, seen in the attached picture. Sweatshirts, shirts, and hats bearing hockey sticks and clover leaves are sold by a man named Johnny Kelly, who has lived in Charlestown his entire life. He has great pride for where he lives, and involves himself in the lives of the poor neighborhood kids. The map shows the location of Johnny Kelly’s shop and folks met throughout my observation as well as interesting notes. The map also displays the observed locations of “Drive Slow, Children/Elderly” signs scattered throughout the neighborhood. John Kelly’s care for the kids of the neighborhood is reflected in the street signs. Title A name given to the resource Kathleen Hanley Description An account of the resource Although East Boston remains one of the last neighborhoods in Boston that is relatively affordable, it is experiencing becoming demographically diverse. Some more desirable neighborhoods like Jefferies Point are being redeveloped with newer, more high-end apartments. As a result these neighborhoods are being filled by small upper middle class families. Less desirable neighborhoods like Eagle Hill become incredibly dense as the people pushed out of the southern waterfront land are crammed up into the northern half of East Boston. To explore this shifting density, I decided to count the number of names per mailbox address. This gave me a better idea of the actual number of people living in an apartment then more formal census data might. My map shows three small groups of houses (one in Eagle Hill, one in Jefferies point, and one near Constitution Beach) and their various densities. Through this data I can start to guess where change is happening in East Boston, and how its changing what a resident of Eastie looks like. My photograph is of two seemingly young working professionals walking in the Constitution Park greenway. Title A name given to the resource Kenneth Palmer Description An account of the resource The photograph I took is a pretty straightforward depiction of condominium development in South Boston on Broadway street. I found it striking and relevant because it was so visually blatant, with the words “Luxury Condominiums for Sale” printed in large type across the sign blocking the view of the actual construction, and because it related so intimately with the topic that ended up filling most of my paper, gentrification.
