<text>The photograph I took is a pretty straightforward depiction of condominium development in South Boston on Broadway street. I found it striking and relevant because it was so visually blatant, with the words “Luxury Condominiums for Sale” printed in large type across the sign blocking the view of the actual construction, and because it related so intimately with the topic that ended up filling most of my paper, gentrification. Even in the background of the picture are more new boxy, colorful columns of new development, and the image overall seems representative of the shift in South Boston toward rapid development and demographic shifting. </text>

<text>I have chosen a photo and map that I think convey the culture of Charleston, that is still influenced by the strongly white, Irish Charleston of the bussing era in Boston. The map shows the percentage of residents over the age of 25 with some college education. You can tell, particularly compared to Downtown Boston, Beacon Hill, and Back Bay (which are all also in the photo) that Charleston is overall less educated and we can infer from this, more blue-collar and less academic. This is supported by the fact that Charleston also has very few colleges and university compared with other parts of Boston – the most prominent of which being Bunker Hill Community College. The picture also gives a good sense of what it is like to live in Charleston. The cars are literally parked bumper to bumper, which gives a sense of how dense the population is in these neighborhoods. There is also a Boston Fire Department sticker clearly visible in the rear windshield of the blue car, and a green, Irish “Erin Go Bragh” sticker with a harp on the opposite side of the windshield (not visible in this picture). Combined with the fact that the second car is a large pickup truck, it is highly evident that this is a community that values hard work and manual labor, and is extremely proud of their Irish heritage. Additionally, the several plants on the front steps and window sill of the house in the background shows a strong sense of trust and investment in the community. The picture was taken on the corner of Mead and Main St. in Charleston, and the Map is from Social Explorer.</text>

<text>Selecting what to photograph in Charlestown was very difficult. Photographing the Halloween decorations, my indicator, on various houses revealed little about the neighborhood as a whole, and I wanted my photo to relate to my indicator. It was after I returned to the Bunker Hill Monument from the end of my walk that I realized if a large part of my analysis intended to focus on the distance from the monument and decrease in decorations, this is what I should show. Therefore, in my photo, the leftmost part of what is shown, the home with the American flag, is the first house I counted, which had the most decorations of any I saw, although they did not make it into the photo because of framing limitations. The rightmost side is the monument itself. This intends to demonstrate the extreme physical proximity between the start of the decorations and the monument, and subsequently what I interpret as high real estate prices and high family income. The map I choose to include shows the economic characteristics of the area. There are two maps because the economic overlay on map one is so dark that it covers street names entirely, so map two may be used as a point of reference. I started at the Bunker Hill Monument and traveled slightly southeast, down to Harvard Street.</text>

<text>The photograph and map together show the socioeconomic divide in Jeffries Point neighborhood located in East Boston. The map illustrates that houses closer to the Boston Inner Harbor are more expensive than those near Maverick T Station. Thus, residents living near the harbor are of a higher social class than those inhabiting apartments closer to Maverick Square. The photographs present a visual indicator of this socioeconomic discrepancy in the form of flower pot decorations outside of people’s homes. The left photograph was taken in the part of the neighborhood closer to Maverick Square at the interesection of Sumner Street and Cottage Street. In the picture, none of the stretch of houses have flower pots outside their homes. The sidewalks also appear somewhat dirty, and there is some litter on the ground. The right photograph was taken near the intersection of Sumner Street and Jeffries Street in the portion of the neighborhood closer to Boston Inner Harbor. In the picture, there are more flower pots outside the homes of residents, and the streets appear cleaner and there are more street trees. Thus, looking at decorations can elucidate the socioeconomic boundaries of a neighborhood.</text>

<text>The map indicates handcrafted signs observed along Shawmut Avenue in the South End. The red markers indicate signs written in Chinese, the purple indicate signs written in both Chinese and English, and the blue indicate signs written in just English. One sign in the window of a laundromat announcing its closure. It read, “We are officially closed! Thank you for a great 15 yrs. Your loyalty will never be forgotten. Thank you. Jody.” This sign hints at the story of a local business that had been in operation for 15 years and an owner who had positive relationships with loyal customers. Despite this history, the business is closing, possibly due to the owner’s personal reasons and/or reasons related to gentrification.</text>

<text>The photo captures a well-kept MGH research lab in the Navy Yard campus juxtaposed against a completely worn-down warehouse. It shows both the amount of investment Charlestown has put into the area near MGH's Navy Yard campus recently, including the new apartment complex that isn't in the photo, but also the freshness of this investment project, as there's still this beat up warehouse that pedestrians find aesthetically unpleasing, also triggering a suspicion regarding the safety and financial demographic of the neighborhood.

The map shows the financial demographic of Navy Yard/MGH and the more residential neighborhood on the opposite side of Route 1 closer to Bunker Hill monument. It illustrates the vast difference between the Navy Yard area and the residential area, portraying the consequence of heavy investing in the Navy Yard/MGH area compared to the Bunker Hill/Chestnut St. area, as the former is clearly more suited for visitors while the latter does not even host much of a presence of its local residents, and the latter also where Winthrop Park, an old park without much upkeep.</text>
