<text>The photograph and map together show the socioeconomic divide in Jeffries Point neighborhood located in East Boston. The map illustrates that houses closer to the Boston Inner Harbor are more expensive than those near Maverick T Station. Thus, residents living near the harbor are of a higher social class than those inhabiting apartments closer to Maverick Square. The photographs present a visual indicator of this socioeconomic discrepancy in the form of flower pot decorations outside of people’s homes. The left photograph was taken in the part of the neighborhood closer to Maverick Square at the interesection of Sumner Street and Cottage Street. In the picture, none of the stretch of houses have flower pots outside their homes. The sidewalks also appear somewhat dirty, and there is some litter on the ground. The right photograph was taken near the intersection of Sumner Street and Jeffries Street in the portion of the neighborhood closer to Boston Inner Harbor. In the picture, there are more flower pots outside the homes of residents, and the streets appear cleaner and there are more street trees. Thus, looking at decorations can elucidate the socioeconomic boundaries of a neighborhood.</text>

<text>	The photo I submitted shows LoPresti Park in East Boston. This photo shows some of the new investment that I saw in this part of East Boston. This park is near Suffolk County Census Track 503, which has a significant level of people living in poverty. Suffolk Country Census Track 503 and Suffolk Country Census Track 504 were at the heart of my assignment. This is because I found their data fascinating. 503 has a large percent of its population making less that $15,000 annually while in 504 that is a very small percent of its population. In addition, both of these tracks have relatively similar median housing values ($263,000 and $283,000 respectively). This contrast is shown in the map I submitted for this assignment. The map shows how these two tracks are quite different socio-economically but not too different from a housing value perspective. After my walk I realized that both of these communities are struggling but as the photo shows there is hope, in the form of some new investment in this area. </text>

<text>I have chosen a photo and map that I think convey the culture of Charleston, that is still influenced by the strongly white, Irish Charleston of the bussing era in Boston. The map shows the percentage of residents over the age of 25 with some college education. You can tell, particularly compared to Downtown Boston, Beacon Hill, and Back Bay (which are all also in the photo) that Charleston is overall less educated and we can infer from this, more blue-collar and less academic. This is supported by the fact that Charleston also has very few colleges and university compared with other parts of Boston – the most prominent of which being Bunker Hill Community College. The picture also gives a good sense of what it is like to live in Charleston. The cars are literally parked bumper to bumper, which gives a sense of how dense the population is in these neighborhoods. There is also a Boston Fire Department sticker clearly visible in the rear windshield of the blue car, and a green, Irish “Erin Go Bragh” sticker with a harp on the opposite side of the windshield (not visible in this picture). Combined with the fact that the second car is a large pickup truck, it is highly evident that this is a community that values hard work and manual labor, and is extremely proud of their Irish heritage. Additionally, the several plants on the front steps and window sill of the house in the background shows a strong sense of trust and investment in the community. The picture was taken on the corner of Mead and Main St. in Charleston, and the Map is from Social Explorer.</text>
