Title A name given to the resource Homelessness in Boston Description An account of the resource Within my paper, I explore the issue of homelessness that is so prevalent in and around Boston. In particular, past, present, and future measures taken and being taken by the local and state governments, as well as various organizations, are a large focus of the paper, and are used to better understand the nature of Boston's particular problem with homelessness. Risk factors for homelessness and the more common causes in Boston are explored and analyzed, to help further understand why some approaches might work and others might not, as well as what neighborhoods within Boston might be at greatest risk. Ways to mitigate and eventually end homelessness in Boston are also explored and discussed within the paper, questioning what homelessness may reveal about Boston and society at large. Description An account of the resource In 2007, Harvard Law School professors Gerald Frug and David Barron published a report entitled “Boston Bound”, comparing Boston’s legal structure to six other major United States cities: Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, New York, San Francisco, and Seattle. The authors argue that Boston’s comparatively restrictive structure prohibits the City from generating significant revenue outside of property taxes and state aid. This paper examines the during- and post-Financial Crisis period to determine whether Boston confronts the same comparative challenges in revenue generation and remains less competitive. Boston’s reliance upon property taxes actually provided the City economic stability during the Financial Crisis. Yet, the City confronts the same legal restrictions as in “Boston Bound”. At the same time, Boston’s property supply restrictions and demand from high employment, especially in high-wage STEM fields, favor higher property prices. The economic fundamentals driving high property prices suggest that, should Boston loosen its restrictions on property tax revenue generation, it will be less “bound” in the future. However, with no foreseeable legal changes, Boston continues to seek taxable base expansion centered on new business development. Long term, the City might be well served by also focusing on the spending side of its budget to secure its financial future and competitiveness. Title A name given to the resource Isobel Davies Description An account of the resource Showing the level of Physical Disorder along the route I walked (West Broadway street to Dorchester street). I feel that for the most part this map mirrors my personal findings on my walk, namely that the physical appearance of Broadway St deteriorated as I headed towards Dorchester Street. I was slightly perplexed however to see that according to the map I created that the area just before Dorchester Street had supposedly lower levels of physical disorder than that of the intersections with D street and E street in contrary to my findings. I took this photo just at the intersection of West Broadway Street and E street, I feel this photo clearly shows signs of physical decay, such as the abandoned gated store, plants growing up a building on the right, and the unpainted chipped walls of a takeout store.
