<text>I have chosen a photo and map that I think convey the culture of Charleston, that is still influenced by the strongly white, Irish Charleston of the bussing era in Boston. The map shows the percentage of residents over the age of 25 with some college education. You can tell, particularly compared to Downtown Boston, Beacon Hill, and Back Bay (which are all also in the photo) that Charleston is overall less educated and we can infer from this, more blue-collar and less academic. This is supported by the fact that Charleston also has very few colleges and university compared with other parts of Boston – the most prominent of which being Bunker Hill Community College. The picture also gives a good sense of what it is like to live in Charleston. The cars are literally parked bumper to bumper, which gives a sense of how dense the population is in these neighborhoods. There is also a Boston Fire Department sticker clearly visible in the rear windshield of the blue car, and a green, Irish “Erin Go Bragh” sticker with a harp on the opposite side of the windshield (not visible in this picture). Combined with the fact that the second car is a large pickup truck, it is highly evident that this is a community that values hard work and manual labor, and is extremely proud of their Irish heritage. Additionally, the several plants on the front steps and window sill of the house in the background shows a strong sense of trust and investment in the community. The picture was taken on the corner of Mead and Main St. in Charleston, and the Map is from Social Explorer.</text>

<text>Selecting what to photograph in Charlestown was very difficult. Photographing the Halloween decorations, my indicator, on various houses revealed little about the neighborhood as a whole, and I wanted my photo to relate to my indicator. It was after I returned to the Bunker Hill Monument from the end of my walk that I realized if a large part of my analysis intended to focus on the distance from the monument and decrease in decorations, this is what I should show. Therefore, in my photo, the leftmost part of what is shown, the home with the American flag, is the first house I counted, which had the most decorations of any I saw, although they did not make it into the photo because of framing limitations. The rightmost side is the monument itself. This intends to demonstrate the extreme physical proximity between the start of the decorations and the monument, and subsequently what I interpret as high real estate prices and high family income. The map I choose to include shows the economic characteristics of the area. There are two maps because the economic overlay on map one is so dark that it covers street names entirely, so map two may be used as a point of reference. I started at the Bunker Hill Monument and traveled slightly southeast, down to Harvard Street.</text>

<text>The photograph and map together show the socioeconomic divide in Jeffries Point neighborhood located in East Boston. The map illustrates that houses closer to the Boston Inner Harbor are more expensive than those near Maverick T Station. Thus, residents living near the harbor are of a higher social class than those inhabiting apartments closer to Maverick Square. The photographs present a visual indicator of this socioeconomic discrepancy in the form of flower pot decorations outside of people’s homes. The left photograph was taken in the part of the neighborhood closer to Maverick Square at the interesection of Sumner Street and Cottage Street. In the picture, none of the stretch of houses have flower pots outside their homes. The sidewalks also appear somewhat dirty, and there is some litter on the ground. The right photograph was taken near the intersection of Sumner Street and Jeffries Street in the portion of the neighborhood closer to Boston Inner Harbor. In the picture, there are more flower pots outside the homes of residents, and the streets appear cleaner and there are more street trees. Thus, looking at decorations can elucidate the socioeconomic boundaries of a neighborhood.</text>

One sign in the window of a laundromat announcing its closure. It read, “We are officially closed! Thank you for a great 15 yrs. Your loyalty will never be forgotten. Thank you. It shows both the amount of investment Charlestown has put into the area near MGH's Navy Yard campus recently, including the new apartment complex that isn't in the photo, but also the freshness of this investment project, as there's still this beat up warehouse that pedestrians find aesthetically unpleasing, also triggering a suspicion regarding the safety and financial demographic of the neighborhood.

The map shows the financial demographic of Navy Yard/MGH and the more residential neighborhood on the opposite side of Route 1 closer to Bunker Hill monument. It illustrates the vast difference between the Navy Yard area and the residential area, portraying the consequence of heavy investing in the Navy Yard/MGH area compared to the Bunker Hill/Chestnut St. area, as the former is clearly more suited for visitors while the latter does not even host much of a presence of its local residents, and the latter also where Winthrop Park, an old park without much upkeep.</text>

<text>This photo was taken at 341 High St. in Charlestown, Boston and the Map is from WorldMap. For the map, I chose to focus on the measure of Income in Boston. This shows something unique about Charlestown in that it shows that while there is a large amount of people who are in the highest categories of income, there are also a large population on the other end of the spectrum. This can be seen as a representation of the gentrification process that is going on. The picture that I took also represents the unique situation that Charlestown is in because the neighborhood is becoming more and more gentrified. This picture is of a door on a strikingly fancy and modern looking row house, with a note that says, "Due to packages being stolen: Please DO NOT LEAVE PACKAGES at the front door,”. This shows that while Charlestown is being gentrified, it is not fully there and still has aspects of its rough, working class past.</text>

The yellow line shows the route which I walked on my visit.

Photo: This photo shows the side of the building of Al's Liquor Store which I describe in my essay. This business is clearly very proud to be an Irish establishment in a strong Irish neighborhood. What is interesting is directly across the street from Al's, there is an invasion of new, pristine, and identical houses which cut through this image of the rough and tumble, working class Irish Southie. This is an instance when the quintessential Southie and what it could be becoming could be seen side by side, which was very striking.</text>

<text>This mosaic hangs outside the entrance to an elementary school in the center of the South End. To me, it represents a child’s idyllic vision of what the South End is and can be. The prominent features of the piece to me are the references to different ethnic groups in different sections, as well as the nature motifs of tress and the sun and the rainbow in the middle. The mentions of different ethnic groups, as well as the various faces, hands, and bodies, suggest the not only the multicultural nature of the South End, but the possibility of cooperation and cohabitation in the neighborhood, as many of the bodies stand alongside those of different colors. The nature motifs also present an idyllic view of the neighborhood—they suggest life and growth, which many would say is the goal of many of the renewal and renovation efforts in the area as of late.</text>

<text>My photo is of The Cathedral of the Holy Cross. I choose this picture because I have been coming to this church for years and I never knew it was in the South End of Boston. I always thought the church and the mass were so beautiful so I imagined we were in a great part of Boston where most of the community members must be wealthy. However, after my walk and visit to the South End I realized that this is not the case, but it made me love the South End even more.
For my map on Social Explorer, I choose to look at the houses that were listed above 1 million dollars. I choose this because since my indicator was nice cars (BMWs, Mercedes, etc.), I thought that these cars would have to most likely correlate to nice homes, and I think my map that I choose shows this correlation. As noted in my paper, all of the nice cars were going to and coming from the side street and as you can see from the map, all of the homes above 1 million dollars seemed to be clustered around these side streets between the main drags. </text>
